*** Windows XP and Internet Explorer - a known problem ***

If you have recently bought a computer, you may find that you cannot view some webpages as intended. This is not a fault of the webpages, but has arisen because of (yet another) legal case involving Microsoft...

If your computer was recently purchased and came with Windows XP installed, or has been recently upgraded to Windows XP, then you may find that some parts of webpages may not be visible using your Internet Explorer browser.

This is because some code within Windows XP has been removed by Microsoft in recently issued versions due to an ongoing legal case involving Microsoft and Sun (who originally provided Microsoft with this code).  The removal of this code means that your Internet Explorer browser may be unable to display 'Java applets' which web developers commonly use to create interactivity on web pages.

As examples of this, the glowing menu buttons which used to be at the top of Gill's web pages use 'Java applets', as did the Calendar on her Diary page. If you were unable to see any of these, then this was almost certainly the reason.   This will also affect many other websites you view which also use 'Java applets', and you may experience items which do not display on these, too.

Even though they are not quite as pretty as before, we have re-coded the affected items
on Gill's webpages so you will be able to see them as intended.
