Linton Tweeds at Sewing for Pleasure, NEC |
An earlier Linton Tweeds trip...
by Joan Baker
 |
"We set off by train to
visit the famous Linton Tweeds Mill in Carlisle Cumbria. It was a delightful journey, in
good company, travelling through beautiful countryside, followed by a warm welcome at the
Linton Complex.
|
| Carol Walker, company director,
showed us the most amazing, unusual and intricate yarns which go to make the beautiful
fabrics for the fashion couture houses such as Chanel in Paris, Balmain, William Hartnell,
London and Bruce Oldfield etc. |
After this amazing insight into
the world of unusual yarns collected from the Far East, Italy America and of course our
own British Isles, we had a delicious lunch in the Bobbin Restaurant before browsing
through the Linton Fabrics shop. We found lots of bargains and then visited the designer knitwear
to complement the fine fabrics. |
 |
It was such a privilege to be
allowed through the hand weave shop and see the experienced craftsmen and women using the
very old handlooms and the modern fast working, computerised machines. |
| The mill had a great atmosphere
with every one of the workforce being multi-talented and, like a large family, reliant on
each others achievements. |
We learned about the family
history of Linton Company and we even discovered that the mill chimney is the seventh
tallest in the world and the mill is a listed building." |
