More about Fred Winter's shop

WHAT'S IN STORE

The Fred Winter family business was established in Stratford upon Avon in 1858 as a general drapery and gentleman's outfitters. Due to our changing lifestyle and the development of ready to wear fashion, the store began to sell ladies fashions and fabrics. In the late 1960s high fashion and high quality were paramount to Fred Winter. And now, a new store and the fifth generation of the Fred Winter family has made further changes within the store to sell furnishings and of course, I am pleased to say, the fashion fabric and haberdashery department remains.

How lucky we are to have Mr Frederick Brian Winter running the Fabric and Haberdashery Department. He clearly has a wonderful understanding of fabric and enjoys working in the department. He is at hand to give advice and talk to the customers. Years of training with many major stores has given Mr Frederick Brian Winter a wonderful eye for quality fabrics, which he sells at good prices. He insists on traditionally high standards of customer service. The department manageress Penny Bailey and her two sales assistants are also extremely helpful. The department caters for dressmaking, tailoring and hobbycrafts and has such varied stocks too numerous to list. There is a good selection of natural fabrics and I often recommend my tailoring students to work with the beautiful woollen fabrics. An example is the Cashmeres, very reasonably priced at £20 per metre. If occasion wear or bridal fabric is required, the silk dupion, chiffon and brocades cost approximately £8 per metre. Linen and cotton are displayed with many well-known names such as Liberty prints. Fashion fabrics in polyester, viscose and mixtures, woven and jersey are all in stock. Various interfacings and a good selection of unusual and high quality lining can be purchased.

A HABY HAVEN

In the fabric department is a 12-metre wall covered from ceiling to floor with haberdashery - everything for your project available in one store. Browse through the pattern catalogues and collect your latest issue of Sewing World from the Haberdashery Department.

If you feel exhausted and need a break to reflect on which fabric to purchase, upstairs is the Mida's Cafe Bar, run by Mida a warm friendly Moroccan. The cafe is bright and welcoming and offers a tempting selection of meals and drinks.

VISITING A TOURIST TOWN

As Fred Winter department store is located in historic Stratford Upon Avon this is not only a great place to find fabric, but a chance to dwell awhile amidst history. An early start is recommended because there is so much to see and do, for all the family - a day to browse and enjoy fabric shopping, while partners and children enjoy the numerous tourist attractions.

Discover the fascinating story of Shakespeare's life. Lake a cruise along the river Avon or take the open topped bus to visit the beautiful Warwickshire countryside. The river and adjacent park has been a favourite location for my family with picnic seating and enclosed play area suitable for toddlers and older children. With something for everyone to do and such an idyllic location accessible by road, rail or coach this makes your shopping a relaxing experience.

TRAVEL TIPS

When you arrive in Stratford Upon Avon a good land mark to head for is William Shakespeare's Birthplace in Henley Street. A short distance away is Fred Winter. If travelling by car, parking is available around the corner in Windsor Street and disabled parking available at the rear of the store.

"I organised a petition when I heard that one of my favourite fabric stores was closing down, due to the managing director’s retirement. The petition successful saved the department, and 2 years on, it is thriving. I am running regular seminars to promote the fabric and haberdashery department and encourage more ladies to sew and work with the beautiful fabrics in store."
